Part 2: How Does Calibre DRM Removal Work?

As a plugin, DeDRM works in the background. It removes DRM protection from ebooks when they imported into Calibre. So, if you have added DRM protected books to Calibre before installing the DeDRM plugin. you will need to remove the book and import it to Calibre again. Also, the DRM removing procedure may vary depending on the type of ebook DRM.

For Google Play books, Overdrive books, and other books that use Adobe DRM. Adobe Digital Editions is required to download the real book before adding to Calibre. For Nook book, you need to get the hash key, and for Kindle eInk reader, you need to input the serial number of the device.

Calibre DeDRM don’t support removing removing DRM from rented or library ebooks. And there is no workable way to remove DRM from rented ebooks.

3. Calibre Saying that the DeDRM plugin is invalid

I followed the guide, and downloading the DeDRM plugin. while I am trying to install the plugin, Calibre keeps saying that the plugin is invalid.

Please download the plugin from GitHub. Select the zip file in the “DeDRM_calibre_plugin” folder. not any other files inside the plugin’s zip archive.

4. Book Still have DRM after install the DeDRM Plugin

I installed the calibre DeDRM plugin, why my books still have DRM.

Calibre DeDRM plugin work when the ebook imported to Calibre. So, if the book have added before installing the plugin. you have to delete the book from Calibre the import the book again. Workaround 1: Reload the ebook to Calibre

Most of the time, people failed to remove the DRM because they have added the book before installing the plugin. Simply loading the book again can’t resolve this problem, here is what you need to do:

Step 1: Select a e-book in the Caliber library and right-click → “Delete Book” → “Delete Selected Book”.

Step 2: Restart Calibre and add it to Calibre’s library again.

How to remove ebook DRM with Calibre

Intrusive DRM often means ebooks you've purchased can only be read on one type of device, especially when it comes to the Amazon products like the Kindle Voyage.

Here's how to remove ebook DRM, so you can read your purchases on any of your multiple devices, including competing e-readers.

1. Install Calibre

Calibre is free to download, and the latest version for Windows is There are also versions available for OSX, Linux, and every version of Windows since XP SP3.

We used the Windows version on a PC running Windows bit, converting files from a 4th Gen Kindle.

Once the 54MB installer has downloaded, run it, and it will ask to be pointed to any folders you may already have for existing e-book purchases.

If you don't have any such folder, create a new one. You'll also be asked to plug in the type of e-Reader you use.

Depending on which one you select, you'll then be presented with a range of options. Fill them in, and then Calibre will start up for the first time.

2. Install the DRM-remover

Calibre supports various plug-ins, and we're going to use Apprentice Alf's DRM Removal Tool for e-Books. You can download the latest version from here.

You'll download a .zip file containing three folders and a bilin.com.mx file; unzip them to a new folder on your desktop.

Now fire up Calibre, and click the large Preference button on the top menu, far right hand side. Select the "Change Calibre behaviour" option, then scroll down to the advanced section before clicking on Plugins.

A new screen will pop up, and you need to click the "Load plugin from file" button at the bottom right corner.

Point the software to the folder you unzipped Alf's tools to, then click on the DeDRM_calibre_plugin folder.

Then highlight the DeDRM_bilin.com.mx file, and hit the Open button. Click Yes when the virus warning starts up. Shut down Calibre, and then fire it up once more.

3. Remove the DRM

Now that all of the hard work is done, you can simply remove DRM by importing books into Calibre's library.

If you already have your books stored on your PC, simply drag and drop them into Calibre's main window. If you're taking books off your e-Reader, plug it into your PC via USB.

Using File Explorer, drag and drop the e-Books from your e-Reader into Calibre's main window, and all that nasty DRM will be stripped out. However, Kindle users will need to jump through a few extra hoop first.

Head back into Calibre's Preferences menu, then go to Advanced, then Plugins, then double click the line called "File type plugins".

You'll see the DeDRM plugin; double click it. Select the first entry "eInk Kindle ebooks", then click the green plus button in the new window.

A small empty window will pop up, and this needs your Kindle's serial number.

Finding the serial number varies depending on the version of Kindle you're using – on our older 4th Gen Kindle, the serial number was found on page two of the Kindle's "Settings" screen.

To find where your serial, simply type "serial location", along with the model name of your Kindle, into Google.

Once you've got the serial number, type it into the Calibre window, removing any spaces as you go. Click Close, then OK – you should now be back at the Calibre Preferences Plugins window – click Apply in the top right.

Now head back to File Explorer and navigate to the area on your Kindle that stores your books. You'll notice that each book has several files associated with it.

Our copy of Doctor Sleep By Stephen King actually had five different file types - *.apnx, *.azw3, *.ea, *.han and *.phl.

Drag and drop every file associated with the book into the main Calibre window – as you can see in our screenshot, a warning will pop up about duplicates.

Click the "Select None" button, and then OK. Voila, you'll see your book now in Calibre's main Window, and it's % DRM free.

For some reason, our book showed up twice in the list, but only one of them worked – we removed the other by right clicking it and selecting "remove book".

4. Converting and testing

To test that the DRM really has been removed, and show you how to change the book type in the process, we're going to make Doctor Sleep a PDF.

Right click the book title in the main Calibre window, and select Convert books > Convert Individually.

A new window will open, laden with dozens of options to tailor the output. Change the Output format in the top right to PDF, then click OK in the bottom right. You can also change it to any other e-Reader format, but we wanted to use PDF so we could see it easily on the PC.

After about 30 seconds of page crunching, Calibre spat out Doctor Sleep as a PDF. However, the font size was huge, so we converted it again, but this time used the font size option on the PDF Output options screen to make it much smaller.

After fiddling with a few of the settings here, we finally ended up with a PDF (opens in new tab) that was as clearly laid out as the original e-Book but playable on any device.

Getting and Using the Tools

I can’t get the tools to work on my rented or library ebooks.

Support for removing DRM from rented or library ebooks is not provided.

I am trying to install the calibre plugin, but calibre keeps on saying that the plugin is invalid.

You might be trying to add the tools archive. The tools archive is not a calibre plugin. It is a collection of various DRM removal tools which includes calibre plugin. You must unzip the archive, and install the calibre plugin from a folder called “DeDRM_calibre_plugin” in the unzipped archive.

I’ve fully unzipped the tools archive, but I can’t find the calibre plugin when I try to add them to calibre. I use Windows.

You should select the zip file that is in the “DeDRM_calibre_plugin” folder, not any files inside the plugin’s zip archive. Make sure you are selecting from the tools folder that you created when you right clicked and selected “Extract All…” on the tools zip archive and not selecting a file inside the still-zipped tools archive.

(The problem is that Windows will allow apps to browse inside zip archives without needing to unzip them first. If there are zip archives inside the main zip archives, Windows will show them as unzipped as well. So what happens is people will unzip the DeDRM_tools_bilin.com.mx to create the DeDRM_tools_X.X.X folder but when using calibre they will actually navigate to the still zipped file by mistake and cannot tell they have done so because they do not have file extensions showing. So to the unwary Windows user, it appears that the zip archive was unzipped and that everything inside it was unzipped as well so there is no way to install the plugins.

This is why we strongly recommend renaming the DeDRM_tools_bilin.com.mx archive (after extracting its contents) to DeDRM_tools_zip_bilin.com.mx If people do that, they are less likely to navigate to the wrong location from inside calibre.)

I have installed the calibre plugins, but now I get an error “Plugin not configured! Decryption unsuccessful. This may be the first time you’ve used this plugin (or the first time since upgrading this plugin). You’ll need to open the customization dialog (Preferences->Plugins->File type plugins).”

You have an old version of the plugin for Barnes & Noble ePubs installed. Make sure you remove all of the old versions of the plugins after installing the new all-in-one DeDRM plugin.

How do I remove the old plugins?

Open calibre
Select the menu “Preferences/Change calibre behavior”
Select “Plugins” (on the bottom row, green jigsaw-puzzle button)
Check the check box “Show only user installed plugins”
Click on the “>” arrow in the line: “> File type plugins”
For each old plugin in turn,
- Click on the plugin to select it
- Click on the remove plugin button
- Click on OK button in the confirmation dialog
- If there are more to delete, click on the “>” arrow in the line: “> File type plugins” to re-open the list.
Click “Apply” (top left of dialog)
Click “Close” (bottom right of dialog)

The DRM only gets removed when the ebook is imported into calibre. If the book is already in calibre, you must delete the book from calibre and import the ebook again. How can I download copies of my Barnes & Noble Nookbooks?

Even though Barnes & Noble has removed the download pages for their older PC and Mac software from their website, the installation files are still currently available on their servers via these direct links:

The downloaded books can be found in Documents/My Barnes & Noble eBooks. There are a few types of books which cannot be downloaded with this software, but they cannot currently be decrypted with the tools. These include Page Perfect Nookbooks (PDFs), enhanced ebooks (i.e. Nook Kids Read-to-me), and many image heavy items (i.e. comics/graphic novels).

Older Nook devices and older versions of the Nook Android app also allow access to the ebook files when connected via USB to your computer.

Be sure to download fresh copies before attempting to remove the DRM, as previously downloaded copies may not have the current encryption even though the device or app can still open them.

I have installed the calibre plugin, and the book is not already in calibre, but the DRM does not get removed.

If you cannot read the ebook on your current device or installed software, the tools will certainly not be able to remove the DRM. Download a fresh copy that does work with your current device or installed software.

Barnes and Noble changed the way they generate the decryption key for their DRMed ebooks starting in late , with all accounts apparently being switched over to the new scheme by the end of March

There are currently two ways to get a decryption key for your Barnes & Noble (nook) ebooks:

Enter your Barnes & Noble account email address and password into the configuration dialog. The DeDRM tools v or later will use this information to retrieve the decryption key from the B&N servers. The email address and password will not be stored.
Install Nook Study (Windows download, Macintosh download), and download your ebooks through that. The DeDRM tools v or later will pick up the decryption key from the Nook Study log files automatically.

I have installed the calibre plugin, and the book is not already in calibre, but the DRM does not get removed. It is a Kindle book.

If you are on Windows 8 or newer and using the Windows Store Kindle app, you must download and install the Kindle for PC application directly from the Amazon website. The tools do not work with the Windows Store Kindle app.

If this book is from an E-Ink Kindle, you must enter the serial number into the configuration dialog. The serial number can be found on the device information screen under settings. However, the easiest way to enter it into the configuration dialog without typos is to copy and paste it from the &#;Manage Your Content and Devices&#; page on the Amazon website.

If this book is from Kindle for Mac or Kindle for PC, you must have the Kindle software installed on the same computer as your copy of calibre.

If the book is from Kindle for PC or Kindle for Mac (version or older) and you think you are doing everything right, and you are getting this message, it is possible that the files containing the encryption key aren’t quite in the format the tools expect. To try to fix this:

Deregister Kindle for PC(Mac) from your Amazon account.
Uninstall Kindle for PC(Mac)
Delete the Kindle for PC(Mac) preferences
- PC: Delete the directory [user folder]\AppData\Local\Amazon (it might be hidden) and [user folder]\Documents\My Kindle Content
- Mac: Delete the directory [home folder]/Library/Application Support/Kindle/ and/or [home folder]/Library/Containers/bilin.com.mx Support/Kindle/ (one or both may be present and should be deleted)
Reinstall Kindle for PC(Mac)
re-register Kindle for PC(Mac) with your Amazon account
Download the ebook again. Do not use the files you have downloaded previously.

Some of my books had their DRM removed, but some still say that they have DRM and will not convert.

There are several possible reasons why only some books get their DRM removed.

You still don’t have the DRM removal tools working correctly, but some of your books didn’t have DRM in the first place.
You added your books to calibre in large batches. For some unknown reason, sometimes calibre stops using the plugin after a while on a single import. Delete the books that still have DRM and import them into calibre in batches of twenty.
Kindle only: The problem book is in the Topaz format and contains some coding that the tools do not understand. You will need to get a log of the deDRM attempt, and then send the book and the PID (shown in the log) for the book to Apprentice Harper, so that the tools can be updated. Please open a new issue over at the GitHub repository.
Kindle only: The problem book is in the KFX format which has not been reverse-engineered yet. To get the book in a format the tools can decrypt, either download the book with Kindle for PC/Mac version (or earlier) or go to the Manage Your Content and Devices page at Amazon and choose &#;download and transfer via USB&#; for an E-ink Kindle (enter its serial number into the tool&#;s customization).

If you are still having problems with particular books, you will need to create a log of the DRM removal attempt for one of the problem books, and post that in a comment.

I didn’t use to have any problems with the tools and my Kindle ebooks, but now I’m getting .azw3 files instead of .mobi files.

Amazon have introduced a format called KF8 which the tools identify by giving the extension .azw3. Recent versions of calibre know about .azw3 files and can convert them to Mobipocket or ePub. To view .azw3 files with calibre it is necessary to tell calibre to use its internal viewer for .azw3 files in calibre Preferences/Change calibre behaviour/Behaviour/.

Do the tools work on books from Kobo?

Kobo uses Adobe Digital Editions encryption, but it also uses its own application and encryption system, so you might not have already installed Adobe Digital Editions. Version (download here) is strongly recommended. Version and later are capable of utilizing a new encryption scheme which the tools cannot unlock.

Once you have installed ADE , you must authorise it with an Adobe ID. Failing to do that will link your DRMed ebooks to this particular installation of ADE, instead of to an ID that can be used with any new installation. Do this before you try getting any DRMed ebooks loaded into Adobe Digital Editions. (Help menu/Authorize Computer… Choose Adobe ID for “ebook Vendor” and enter your Adobe ID and password. Adobe ID is usually your email address.)

After you have installed ADE and authorised it with an Adobe ID:

You can find all your Kobo books in your library on the Kobo website.

Some are already DRM-free and have a blue “DOWNLOAD EPUB&#; (or PDF) button.

Those with Adobe DRM have a blue “ADOBE DRM EPUB” (or PDF) button.

Clicking on the “ADOBE DRM EPUB” (or PDF) button downloads an ‘.acsm’ file. This is a link file used by Adobe Digital Editions to download the actual epub or pdf file, and it is at this point that the DRM gets applied for your installation of Adobe Digital Editions.

Make sure your installation of ADE is authorised to your Adobe ID before proceeding. Open the ‘.acsm’ file with Adobe Digital Editions , and the ePub or pdf file will download. See Where are my ebooks? above to find the location of the downloaded ADE epub or pdf. You can now use whichever of the DeDRM removal tools is most convenient for you on this file to obtain your DRM-free book.

Alternatively, you may use the Obok calibre plugin to remove DRM from Kobo books downloaded with the Kobo Desktop application (not the Windows Store app) or on an attached E-Ink Kobo reader (but not a Kobo Arc or Kobo Vox). If both are available, ebooks will be read from the attached E-Ink Kobo reader. To import from the desktop application, unplug the Kobo reader. See the Readme file inside the Obok_calibre_plugin folder of the tools archive for further instructions.

Do the tools work on books from the Google Play store? Or other stores with Adobe DRM?

Google Play books can be downloaded from My Books at the Google Play books website. Click the menu button (3 vertical dots) for the book that you want and chose Download EPUB or Download PDF.

Other ebook stores which use Adobe DRM should have a page on their website where you can download your book files. Look for My Library or My Books while signed into your account.

As described in the answer about Kobo ebooks above, you will first download &#;.acsm&#; files which should be opened with Adobe Digital Editions (authorised with your Adobe ID) to obtain the actual epub or pdf book.

I cannot solve my problem the DeDRM plugin, and now I need to ‘post a log’. How do I do that?

First, remove the DRMed book from calibre. Then look under the Preferences menu for &#;Restart in debug mode.&#; After calibre reopens, import your book and then close calibre. A text log of the import will automatically open. Paste the information into a comment on the main post.

On Macintosh, the DeDRM application creates a log file on your desktop every time it is run. Copy the contents of that (it is a simple text file) and paste it into your comment.

Why don’t the tools work with Kindle Fire ebooks?

The Kindle Fire is Android based unlike any of the earlier standalone Kindles and the current tools will not work with ebooks from Kindle Fire devices.

Your only workaround is to install Kindle for PC or Kindle for Mac and use books from there instead.

Why doesn’t the UDID of my iOS device work for my Kindle for iOS ebooks?

Unfortunately, for most people, the tools no longer work with ebooks from the Kindle for iOS application. This is because Apple no longer allows applications to use the UDID, and so Amazon can’t get access to it.

Some long-term users of the iOS application may find it still works, because Amazon still has a note of their UDID from before the ban came into operation. New installations definitely won’t work.

Your only workaround is to install Kindle for PC or Kindle for Mac and use books from there instead.

Do the tools work on books from the Apple iBooks Store?

Books from Apple’s iBooks Store use a variant of Apple’s Fairplay DRM and therefore the tools in the main tools archive will not work with these ebooks. The only tools previously known to work for these books was Requiem version by Brahms. See this post for more details. Unfortunately, I am unaware of any tools currently capable of removing DRM from Apple&#;s iBooks.

I’ve got the tools archive and I’ve read all the FAQs but I still can’t install the tools and/or the DRM removal doesn’t work

Read the ReadMe_bilin.com.mx file in the top level of the tools archive
Read the ReadMe file in the folder of the tools you want to use.
If you still can’t remove the DRM, ask in the comments on the main post of this blog, reporting the error as precisely as you can, what platform you use, what tool you have tried, what errors you get, and what versions you are using. General Questions

Once the DRM has been removed, is there any trace of my personal identity left in the ebook?

The tools only remove the DRM. No attempt is made to remove any personally identifying information.

What are Kindle Topaz ebooks? HTMLZ? SVG?

Most Amazon Kindle ebooks are Mobipocket format ebooks, or the new KF8 format. However, some are in a format known as Topaz. The Topaz format is only used by Amazon. A Topaz ebook is a collections of glyphs and their positions on each page tagged with some additional information from that page including OCRed text (Optical Character Recognition generated Text) to allow searching, and some additional layout information. Each page of a Topaz ebook is effectively a description of an image of that page. To convert a Topaz ebook to another format is not easy as there is not a one-to-one mapping between glyphs and characters/fonts. To account for this, two different formats are generated by the DRM removal software. The first is an html description built from the OCRtext and images stored in the Topaz file (HTMLZ). This format is easily reflowed but may suffer from typical OCRtext errors including typos, garbled text, missing italics, missing bolds, etc. The second format uses the glyph and position information to create an accurate scalable vector graphics (SVG) image of each page of the book that can be viewed in web browsers that support svg images (Safari, Firefox 4 or later, etc). Additional conversion software can be used to convert these SVG images to an image only PDF file. The DeDRM and Kindlebooks tools from this site provide both versions of the Topaz ebook so that the user can choose which one to use. The K4MobiDeDRM plugin only produces the html version of the ebook. The html version can be manually cleaned up and spell checked and then converted using Sigil/calibre to epubs, mobi ebooks, and etc.

I’ve bought Mobipocket ebooks from an on-line retailer without having to enter the PID of my copy of Mobipocket Reader, and I can read them in Mobipocket Reader. But when I try to convert them to another format, calibre says that they have DRM, but the tools say they don’t contain a PIDs, and I should open them in Mobipocket Reader. What’s going wrong?

The books are downloaded without a PID, but still encrypted. Opening them in Mobipocket Reader causes Mobipocket Reader to create a copy of the ebook that contains with the Mobipocket Reader’s PID. This copy is stored in the My ebooks folder in your Documents folder. It’s this copy that you must use with the DRM removal tools.

Are the tools open source? How can I be sure they are safe and not a trojan horse?

All the DRM removal tools hosted here are almost entirely scripts of one kind or another: Python, Applescript or Windows Batch files. So they are inherently open source, and open to inspection by everyone who downloads them. The source for any compiled pieces are provided right inside the tools themselves.

I have an old encrypted PDF file that won’t open in Adobe Digital Editions, how can I remove the DRM?

If your PDF ebooks cannot be read in Adobe Digital Editions, the tools here cannot help. They are probably encrypted using the Content Server 3 (or earlier) methods which Adobe no longer support, not even to allow conversion to Content Server 4 (AKA Adobe Digital Editions).

Adobe only allowed a nine month window (March-December ) for migration to Adobe Digital Editions after the Content Server 3 servers were discontinued.

You might be able to find tools to remove the DRM from other sites, but there are several different old encryption schemes for PDF files, and I’m unfamiliar with them. Tetrachroma’s blog bilin.com.mx might be a good starting point for Windows users, as he’s done a lot of work on some PDF DRM scheme called ‘File Open’.

What ebooks do these tools work on?

The tools linked from this blog remove DRM from PDF, EPUB, eReader, Mobipocket, KF8, Print Replica and Topaz format ebooks using Adobe Adept, Barnes & Noble, Amazon and eReader DRM schemes.

Note these tools do NOT ‘crack’ the DRM. They simply allow the book’s owner (and only the book’s owner) to use the encryption key information already stored someplace on their computer or device to decrypt the ebook in the same manner the official ebook reading software uses.

Microsoft LIT format ebooks using Microsoft’s DRM scheme can have the DRM removed using ConvertLit from bilin.com.mx

Apple’s Fairplay DRM scheme, used on most ebooks bought at Apple’s iBookstore could previously have the DRM removed using Requiem. Are you still trying to remove Kindle DRM with Calibre but haven't figured it out? If you are a Calibre new user, you are probably confused and disoriented the first time you use it. Don't worry. Today here in this post, I will guide you step by step to remove Kindle DRM with the Calibre. This is helpful for both Windows and Mac users (macOS Catalina & Big Sur included).

For successfully removing Kindle DRM, installing the DeDRM plugin and KFX-input plugin is a prerequisite. Therefore, I will show you this guide first.

Step 2. Run Calibre. Click the &#;Preference&#; at the top menu bar.

Part 2. How to Remove Kindle DRM with Calibre DeDRM?

What Kindle books are supported by Calibre?

(1). Kindle books downloaded via Kindle for PC V or lower version, and Kindle for Mac V or lower version. --This is available for Windows and Mac users (macOS Catalina or higher are not included)

(2). Kindle books downloaded via Amazon's official website (you must own a Kindle e-ink device). -- This is available for all users who own a Kindle e-ink device (including macOS Catalina & Big Sur).

No matter where your Kindle books are downloaded, here I can share with you the detailed guide.

1. Remove DRM from Kindle downloaded via Kindle for PC/Mac

Step 1. Download and install the Kindle desktop app to your PC/Mac.

Step 2. Run Kindle for PC/Mac. In the Kindle library, right-click the book covers to download Kindle books to your computer.

Step 3. Add the Kindle books (in .azw format) to Calibre by clicking on the "Add books" button.

And then you need to manually find your downloaded Kindle AZW books in the folder.

Where are Kindle AZW books stored on PC/Mac?

For Windows: C:/Users/your user name/Documents/My Kindle Content

For Mac: /Users/user name/ Library/ Containers/ bilin.com.mx Data/Library/Application Support/Kindle/My Kindle Content

Failed to remove DRM from Kindle books downloaded via Kindle for PC/Mac with Calibre DeDRM plugin?

If you failed to remove the DRM, you are probably not using the older version of Kindle for PC/Mac. The Kindle eBooks will be encrypted with a new Kindle KFX DRM if you download Kindle eBooks via Kindle for PC/MAC version or higher. Now Calibre cannot handle this new KFX DRM scheme. The current solution is to downgrade your Kindle for PC/Mac to the older version and try once again.

For macOS Catalina and Big Sur users, downgrading to the older version is not working. But you can still use the latest version of Kindle for Mac and patch Kindle for Mac on macOS Catalina or Big Sur to remove Kindle DRM successfully. Or if you have a Kindle e-ink device, you can take the next method.

2. Remove DRM from Kindle downloaded via Amazon website

Step 1. Go to the Amazon page Manage Your Content and Devices.

Step 2. Click the &#;Action&#; button in front of each book title, and then click &#;Download & transfer via USB&#;.

Step 3. Choose your Kindle e-Ink device, and click the button &#;Download&#;.

Note: Please choose the Kindle device you have registered with your Amazon account.

A note will show up when you are downloading the content. You can just save those AZW3 or AZW files on the desktop of your computer.

Step 4. Run Calibre and go to the Peference-Plugins settings. Find the DeDRM under the "File type" option. Double-click the DeDRM to customize DeDRM. Choose "eInk Kindle ebooks".

Next click the add "+" button and input the Kindle Serial Number of your Kindle e-ink device. Then remember to click "Apply" before you close the "Preference-Plugins" window.

(The Kindle Serial Number (KSN) can be found in the Manage Your Content and Device page of Amazon site. Or you follow the detailed guide on How to Easily Find Kindle Serial Number.)

Step 5. When the Kindle Serial Number has been addes, now you can add your Kindle AZW3 or AZW files downloaded from the Amazon website page to Calibre to remove the DRM.

Failed to remove DRM from Kindle books downloaded via Amazon website with Calibre DeDRM plugin?

If you failed to remove DRM from Kindle books that are downloaded via Amazon website, please check whether you have done the following things:

(1) The DeDRM plugin has been added to your Calibre successfully.

(2) The Kindle Serial Number of your Kindle e-ink device has been added to the customization of the DeDRM plugin.

(3) What you own is a Kindle e-ink device. Note that Kindle Fire tablet is not supported.

Sermon: Why DRM Is Bad

Like many people you own an Amazon Kindle device for reading e-books.

And like many companies that trade in digital intellectual property, Amazon includes digital rights management (DRM) software in their e-books. The stated purpose is to prevent piracy, and for that DRM is modestly effective. But DRM also inconveniences legitimate customers.

The problem here is that America&#;s copyright lawyers figured out how to change the rules of ownership. When you buy a paperback book, its content belongs to the author, but the physical book belongs to you. You can loan it to someone, trade it, sell it, or just keep it and reread it as many times as you want. But when you &#;buy&#; a Kindle book, you&#;re renting temporary authorization from Amazon to store the book on up to 6 Amazon-approved devices. This arrangement is bad for customers, for a number of reasons:

Any Kindle book that you &#;own&#; can disappear at any time, because of technological failure, change of license, or simple human error.
If Amazon ever abandons their Kindle business, all your Kindle books could vanish in a flash. Wait, though, isn&#;t Amazon too big to disappear? Maybe. But Kodak, Enron, General Motors, Sears, and the Smith-Corona typewriter company were once &#;too big to fail&#; American institutions too.
DRM interferes with legal uses of copyrighted text, like satire, reuse in teaching materials, and citation in reviews or academic papers. As a one-time IT guy at a public university, I frequently battled with DRM-ed written and recorded materials that instructors or researchers wanted to excerpt. The worst offender here is DVD region encoding.
DRM-ed Kindle books are incompatible with non-Amazon book readers and software. Sure, Amazon software is supported on most platforms now, but what about a decade from now? How many people still have the equipment to read a floppy disk, VHS tape, phonograph record, or audio cassette? A lot of music, art, and writing is abandoned every time our storage technology changes to a different format, whether you&#;re talking about reel-to-reel tapes or clay tablets. If it&#;s important to you, make as many different copies of it as you can stand.

But DRM isn&#;t going away, so&#;

To Remove the DRM from a Kindle E-Book:

(September Notes about file formats and &#;Transfer via USB&#; option. The current DeDRM plugin is as of this update.)
(April As of version , Apprentice Alf&#;s DRM removal tools support Amazon&#;s newer .kfx file format. You&#;ll also need to install the KFX conversion plugin to import your .kfx files into Calibre.)

Update, September as of now, the DeDRM plugin (version ) won&#;t handle .kfx files. If all else fails, when you buy a Kindle book, go to your Amazon account page, then select &#;Manage Your Content and Devices&#; -> Digital Content, click &#;More Actions&#; next to your new book, and select &#;Download and Transfer via USB&#;. Your book will download in .azw3 format. You can then open Calibre and click Add Book to add the new book to your Calibre library, or else you can simply drag the AZW3 file into Calibre. Assuming you&#;ve installed the DeDRM plugin per the instructions below the DRM will be removed as the book is added. You don&#;t need the .kfx plugin with this method.

Download and install the Calibre e-book management utility. Calibre is open-source software and costs nothing, although if you find it useful you might throw developer Kovid Goyal a few dollars. Calibre is available for Windows, Mac, and Linux.
Download Apprentice Alf&#;s DRM removal tools for ebooks. This comes as a .zip archive, so open it up and put the &#;DeDRM_bilin.com.mx&#; archive where you can find it. (You don&#;t need to unzip the &#;DeDRM_bilin.com.mx&#; file.)
Start up Calibre and go to Preferences -> Advanced -> Plugins.(Click images for full size.)
Click the &#;Load plugin from file&#; button.
Select the &#;DeDRM_bilin.com.mx&#; file you placed in step 2 and click &#;Open&#;. Calibre will add this plugin under its &#;File type plugins&#; list in the Preferences window.
If Calibre gives you an error like ERROR: Unhandled exception: InvalidPlugin:The plugin in C:\Users\Me\Downloads\DeDRM_tools_zip&#; is invalid. It does not contain a top-level __init__.py file, you&#;re trying to load the full archive folder into Calibre. Instead you need to open up the .zip file you downloaded and drill down a level. Using this example the file you want is C:\Users\Me\Downloads\DeDRM_tools_zip\DeDRM_bilin.com.mx
Note: If you&#;re using a Kindle reading app instead of a handheld Kindle, you can skip steps below. Instead, just drag the books you&#;ve downloaded into Calibre to remove the DRM. On Windows, your Kindle library will be something like `C:\Users\you\Documents\My Kindle Content` and on a Mac it&#;ll be `/Users/you/Library/Containers/bilin.com.mx Support/Kindle/My Kindle Content`. Note again: For this to work, Kindle for PC or Mac should be installed on the same computer and user account as Calibre, and the version of the reading app you&#;re using matters too. Before You Begin: Check if a Book Has DRM Protection

These days, the vast majority of Kindle books sold have DRM protection. To check, look at the full list of product details on the book’s Amazon store page.

If you see the phrase “simultaneous device usage: unlimited,” the book is not protected and you can proceed to converting it to the desired format. Unfortunately, there’s no other way to determine this, so you’ll have to manually check each book.

Removing Kindle DRM With Calibre

The easiest way to remove DRM from a Kindle book is to use an app called Calibre. Calibre is a reading app that by itself serves as an example of why you might want to remove the DRM from your Kindle book. It sports far more features than the Kindle app, but the only feature we’re looking at today is the ability to add extensions to the program.

That’s because Calibre doesn’t offer free Kindle DRM removal on its own. For that, we’ll need the DeDRM and KFX Input plugins. Calibre is available on Windows, Mac and Linux, but only the first of our two methods will work on Linux devices.

Remove Kindle DRM With Calibre & Kindle E-Reader

The fastest and easiest way to remove Kindle DRM is by using the DeDRM Calibre plugin and the serial number of a Kindle device. For these instructions, we’ll assume that you’ve already downloaded the Kindle books that you want to perform DRM removal on, so check out our guide on how to read Kindle books on PC.

Download &#; Install Calibre
Use a web browser to go to Calibre’s download page and download the version for your operating system. Run the installation file and follow the instructions.
Download &#; Install the DeDRM Plugin
Next, download DeDRM from the official GitHub page. Extract the zip file wherever you want and then launch Calibre. Click on “preferences” in the top right-hand corner of the window and then on “plugins.” Here, you need to click “load plugin from file” and select the “DeDRM_bilin.com.mx” file you just extracted.
Find Your Kindle’s Serial Number
Unlock your Kindle and navigate to the settings menu by tapping the three dots in the top right-hand corner and selecting “settings.” Tap “device options” and then “device info.” This should bring up a panel displaying your Kindle serial number. Write it down without spaces.
Configure the DeDRM Plugin
In the same plugin window as the second step, expand the section called “file type” and find the entry in the list for DeDRM. Select it and click on “customize plugin.” Select “eInk Kindle ebooks” and then click the green plus icon. Enter the serial number you found in the previous step and click “OK.”
Add the KFX Input Plugin
Exit out of the plugin customization screens and click the button that says “get new plugins.” Search for “KFX Input” in the dialog that appears, select the result and click on “install.”
Add Your Book to Calibre
With everything set up, all you need to do is add the Kindle books that you downloaded from Amazon to your Calibre library. If you configured it correctly, the ebook DRM removal will happen automatically.

Remove Kindle DRM With Calibre and Kindle for Windows or Mac

If you don’t own a Kindle, you’ll need to use the Windows or Mac Kindle application. Unfortunately, the official version of the application won’t work for our purposes, so we’ll need to find an older version of the application &#; namely, or older.

Download Kindle for PC or Mac
In order for the Kindle DRM removal process to work, you’ll need an older version of Kindle for PC or Mac. Unfortunately this isn’t available for download directly from Amazon, but you can find legacy installers on various third-party download sites like MediaFire and FileHippo.
Install Kindle for PC or Mac
Since you have to download the installation file from a third-party source, we recommend that you exercise caution. Make sure to scan the file for viruses using an antivirus program. Once you’ve made sure it’s safe, run the file and follow the installation instructions.
Download &#; Install Calibre
Go to Calibre’s download page and download the Windows or Mac version of the program. Run the installation file and follow the instructions. Once launched, Calibre automatically detects Kindle ebooks on your computer, so you might have to delete any DRM-protected books that were automatically imported.

Head over to the DeDRM download page and download the zip archive. Extract its contents somewhere on your computer. Open Calibre and click on “preferences” in the top-right corner. Add the KFX Input Plugin

Launch Kindle for PC &#; Download Your Book
Once you launch the Kindle application, you’ll be prompted to register the device. Enter your Amazon email and password and click “sign in.” Your Kindle ebooks should now appear and you can download the books you want to remove DRM from by right-clicking them and selecting “download” from the context menu.
Configure Kindle Application &#; Locate the Book File
Next, open the settings panel by selecting “tools” in the top bar and then “options.”Uncheck the box for automatic updates, then navigate to the “content” tab on the left-hand side. Jot down the folder location you see here and navigate to it in File Explorer or Finder. The book will be an AZW file that’s named after its Amazon code.
Import Book Into Calibre
Finally, all you need to do to complete the Kindle DRM removal process is to import the Kindle ebook into your Calibre library. Either drop the file directly into the library, or click on the “add books” button in the top-left corner if you want to batch process multiple books at the same time.

What's DRM?

DRM ("Digital Rights Management") is a way of using encryption to tie the books you've bought to a specific device or to a particular piece of software.

Why would I want to remove DRM from my ebooks?

When your ebooks have Kindle drm removal calibre plugin you are unable to convert the ebook from one format to another (e.g. Kindle KF8 to Kobo ePub), so you are restricted in the range of ebook stores you can use. DRM also allows publishers to restrict what you can do with the ebook you've bought, e.g. preventing the use of text-to-speech software. Longer term, you can never be sure that you'll be able to come back and re-read your ebooks if they have DRM, even if you save back-up copies.

So how can I remove DRM from my ebooks?

Just download and use these tools, that's all! Uh, almost. There are a few, uh, kindle drm removal calibre plugin, provisos, a, a couple of quid pro kindle drm removal calibre plugin tools don't work on all ebooks. For example, they don't work on any ebooks from Apple's iBooks store.

You must own the ebook - the tools won't work on library ebooks or rented ebooks or books from a friend.

But otherwise, if your ebook is from Amazon, Kobo, Barnes & Noble or any of the ebook stores selling ebooks compatible with Adobe Digital Editionsyou should be able to remove the DRM that's been applied to your ebooks.

Recent Changes to Kindle for PC/Kindle for Mac

Starting with versionKindle for PC/Mac uses Amazon's new KFX format which isn't quite as good a source for conversion to ePub as the older KF8 (& MOBI) formats. There are two options to get the older formats. Either stick with version or earlier, or modify the executable by changing a file name (PC) or disabling a component of the application (Mac).

Version of Kindle is no longer available directly from Amazon, so you will need to search for the proper file name and find it on a third party site. The name is for PC and for Mac. Verify the one of the following cryptographic hash values, using software of your choice, before installing the downloaded file in order to avoid viruses. If the hash does not match, delete the downloaded file and try again from another site.

You will need to go to the preferences and uncheck the auto update checkbox. Then download and install over the top of the newer installation. You'll also need to delete the KFX folders from your My Kindle Content folder. You may also need to take further action to prevent an auto update. The simplest wayis to find the 'updates' folder and replace it with a file. See [this thread] (bilin.com.mx?t=) at MobileRead for a Script to do this on a PC. On a Mac you can find the folder at ~/Library/Application Support/Kindle/ just delete the folder 'updates' and save a blank text file called 'updates' in its place.

Recent (+) versions of Kindle for Mac/PC may convert KF8 files to a new format that is not supported by these tools when the book is opened for reading.

Decrypting KFX

Thanks to work by several people, the tools can now decrypt KFX format ebooks from Kindle for Mac/PC. In addition to the DeDRM plugin, calibre users will also need to install jhowell's KFX Input plugin which is available through the standard plugin menu in calibre, or directly kindle drm removal calibre plugin his plugin thread on Mobileread.

It's quite possible that Amazon will update their KFX DeDRM to prevent DRM removal from KFX books again. So Remove DRM as soon as possible!

You are trying to add the tools archive (e.g. ) instead of the plugin. The tools archive is not the plugin. It is a collection of DRM removal tools which includes the plugin. You must unzip the archive, and install the calibre plugin from a folder called in the unzipped archive.

I’ve unzipped the tools archive, but I can’t find the calibre plugin when I try to add them to calibre. I use Windows.

You should select the zip file that is in the folder, not any files inside the plugin’s zip archive. Make sure you are selecting from the folder that you created when you unzipped the tools archive and not selecting a file inside the still-zipped tools archive.

(The problem is that Windows will allow apps to browse inside zip archives without needing to unzip them first. If there are zip archives inside the main zip archives, Windows will show them as unzipped as well. So what happens is people will unzip the to a folder, but when using calibre they will actually navigate to the still zipped file by mistake and cannot tell they have done so because they do not have file extensions showing. So to the unwary Windows user, it appears that the zip archive was unzipped and that everything inside it was unzipped as well so there is no way to install the plugins.

We strongly recommend renaming the archive (after extracting its contents) to. If you do that, you are less likely to navigate to the wrong location from inside calibre.)

I can’t get the tools to work on my rented or library ebooks.

The tools are not designed to remove DRM from rented or library ebooks.

I've unzipped the tools, but what are all the different files, and how do I use them?

Read the file and then the ReadMe files for the tools you're interested in. That's what they're for.

I have installed the calibre plugin, but my books still have DRM. When I try to view or convert my books, calibre says they have DRM.

DRM only gets removed when an ebook is imported into calibre. Also, if the book is already in calibre, by default calibre will discard the newly imported file. You can change this in calibre's Adding books preferences page (Automerge/Overwrite), so that newly imported files overwrite existing ebook formats. Then just re-import your books and the DRM-free versions will overwrite the DRMed versions while retaining your books' metadata.

I have installed the calibre plugin, and the book is not already in calibre, but the DRM does not get removed.

You must use the exact file that is used by your ebook reading software or hardware. See the previous question on where to find your ebook files. Do not use an old copy you have that you can no longer read. If you cannot read the ebook on your current device or installed software, the tools will certainly not be able to remove the DRM. Download a fresh copy that does work with your current device or installed software.

I have installed the calibre plugin, and the book is not already in calibre, kindle drm removal calibre plugin, but the DRM does not get removed. It is a Kindle book.

If you are on Windows 8 and using the Windows 8 AppStore Kindle app, you must download and install the Kindle for PC application directly from the Amazon website. The tools do not work with the Windows 8 AppStore Kindle app.

There are several possible reasons why only some books get their DRM removed.

You still don’t have the DRM removal tools working correctly, but some of your books didn’t have DRM in the first place.
Kindle only: It is a Topaz format book and contains some coding that the tools do not understand. You will need to get a log of the DeDRM attempt, and then create a new issue at Apprentice Harper's github repository, attaching the book and the log, kindle drm removal calibre plugin, so that the tools can be updated.

If you are still having problems with particular books, you will need to create a log of the DRM removal attempt for one of the problem books, and post that in a comment at Apprentice Alf's blog or in a new issue at Apprentice Harper's github repository.

My Kindle book has imported and the DRM has been removed, but all the pictures are gone.

Most likely, this is a book downloaded from Amazon directly to an eInk Kindle (e.g. Paperwhite). Unfortunately, the pictures are probably in a file that the tools don't understand. You must download the book manually from Amazon's web site "For transfer via USB" to your Kindle. When you download the eBook in this manner, Amazon will package the pictures in the with text in a single file that the tools will be able to import successfully.

My Kindle book has imported, but it's showing up as an AZW4 format. Conversions take a long time and/or are very poor.

You have found a Print Replica Kindle ebook. This is a PDF in a Kindle wrapper. Now the DRM has been removed, you can extract the PDF from the wrapper using the KindleUnpack plugin. Conversion of PDFs rarely gives good results.

Do the tools work on books from Kobo?

If you use the Kobo desktop application for Mac or PC, kindle drm removal calibre plugin, install the Obok plugin. This will import and remove the DRM from your Kobo books, and is the easiest method for Kobo ebooks.

There are several possible reasons why only some books get their DRM removed.

You still don’t have the DRM removal tools working correctly, but some of your books didn’t have DRM in the first place.
You added your books to calibre in large batches. For some unknown reason, sometimes calibre stops using the plugin after a while on a single import. Delete the books that still have DRM and import them into calibre in batches of twenty.
Kindle only: The problem book is in the Topaz format and contains some coding that the tools do not understand, kindle drm removal calibre plugin. Kobo uses Adobe Digital Editions encryption, but it also uses its own application and encryption system, so you might not have already installed Adobe Digital Editions, kindle drm removal calibre plugin. Do the tools work on books from the Google Play store? Or other stores with Adobe DRM?
