Step Zero: Install Handbrake and libdvdcss So You Can Decrypt DVDs

The main tool we’ll be using to rip DVDs is called Handbrake, which you can download here. Out of the box, Handbrake can rip any DVD that isn’t copy protected…but almost all DVDs you buy in the store are copy protected. Getting around this is a weirdly gray area legally, so applications like Handbrake can’t legally include the software needed to decrypt copy protected DVDs. You can, however, download it separately—as long as you’re just using this to watch a movie on your computer and not starting a bootlegging business, we promise we won’t tell on you.

We’ll be using a free DVD playback library called libdvdcss. This will let Handbrake read your encrypted DVDs and rip them to your computer. The process is a little different for Windows and Mac users, so we’ll go through each one individually. Note that you don’t have to do this every time you rip a DVD—once libdvdcss is installed, you can skip to Step One each time you rip a new disc.

How to Install libdvdcss on Windows

First, you’ll need to download libdvdcss to your computer. For 32-bit versions of Windows, download this version. 64-bit users should download this version, CD/DVD Rip/Other Tools Activators Patch. If you aren’t sure which version of Windows you have, check out this article.

Copy the .dll file to your Handbrake program folder. If you used the default installation settings, this should be in C:\Program Files\Handbrake.

After this, Handbrake will be able to read your encrypted DVDs.

How to Install libdvdcss on macOS

Installing libdvdcss is a little more complicated on macOS, because El Capitan introduced a security feature called System Integrity Protection that won’t let you install libdvdcss without a little help. If you’re on Yosemite or older, you can download the libdvdcss package file here and double-click it to install it.

However, if you’re on El Capitan or newer, we’re going to use a command line tool called Homebrew to get it. Fortunately, it only takes a few Terminal commands to install Homebrew if you haven’t already. Once you’re done, come back here.

To install libdvdcss, press Command+Space and search for Terminal to launch a command line window. Then, type in and hit enter.

Homebrew will download and install the libdvdcss library. Once you’re back at the command prompt, the library will be installed.

Once this is finished, Handbrake should be able to read all of your encrypted DVDs.

Step One: Open Your DVD in Handbrake

Once you’ve installed libdvdcss, it’s time to get ripping. Open Handbrake and choose your DVD drive from the sidebar that appears.

Handbrake will take a moment to scan the titles on your DVD. Wait until this process is finished. It should only take a moment. If libdvdcss wasn’t installed incorrectly, you’ll see an error saying that the disc can’t be read here instead.

Don’t be scared by Handbrake’s complex window—most of this should be pretty CD/DVD Rip/Other Tools Activators Patch. Once your DVD is open, head to the “Title” dropdown box and choose which title you want to rip. By default, Handbrake will choose the movie, but if you want to rip any special features or deleted scenes, you can change the target you want to rip here. If you’re watching on your computer, use one of the “General” presets—“Fast” and “Very Fast” will be low quality but small in size, while “HQ” and “Super HQ” will have higher quality but take up more space.

If you’re ripping a DVD sold in the US, choose the 480p preset. European DVDs are usually 576p. Don’t choose larger presets like 720p or 1080p for DVDs—they won’t make your video look any better, they’ll just make the file bigger.

Step Three: Start Ripping!

Once you’ve chosen your Title and Preset, click Start Encode at the top of the window. Then, grab a snack.

You’ll see a progress bar along the bottom that will let you know how much time you have left in the rip, CD/DVD Rip/Other Tools Activators Patch. Higher quality rips will take longer, so you’ll want to let your computer run for a while.

DAEMON Tools is a virtual drive and optical disc authoring program for Microsoft Windows and Mac OS.^[9]

Overview[edit]

DAEMON tools was originally a successor of Generic SafeDisc emulator and incorporated all of its features.^[10] The program claims to be able to defeat most copy protection schemes such as SafeDisc and SecuROM.^[11] It is currently compatible with Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, CD/DVD Rip/Other Tools Activators Patch, and Windows 10. DAEMON Tools has a special mode for proper operation of copies of discs with advanced protection (SafeDisc, SecuRom and LaserLock, CDCOPS, StarForce and Protect CD), which are used on some discs with games.^[12]

Six editions of the product exist: Ultra, Lite, Pro Standard, Pro Advanced, Net and DT for Mac. File format[edit]

The default file format of DAEMON Tools is Media Data eXtended (MDX). MDX is a disc image file format similar to MDS/MDF images. It supports all of MDS/MDF format features except that all data is in one monolithic file only. The files of these types bear the filename extension of .mdx.^[21]

MDX file contains metadata CD/DVD Rip/Other Tools Activators Patch original media – specifically the main physical parameters of disc, such as layer breaks, sessions, tracks and other. It could be described as being an archive file containing all data from a CD/DVD. It also supports data compression. On 13 February 2012, one of DAEMON Tools components known as MountSpace became a subject of privacy concerns. MountSpace, a service-oriented component gathers and sends information about disc images used in DAEMON Tools to mountspace.com along with users' IP addresses. Although MountSpace can be disabled during installation, it is criticized for transmitting information despite being disabled and lacking a privacy policy.^{[22][23][24][25]} The initial discovery of the concerning issue is attributed to Rafael Rivera of Within Windows blog.^[22][24][25]

YASU (Yet Another SecuROM Utility) is a very small tool that works as a SCSI-drive protector. It was created by sYk0 and can be used to hide emulated drives from SecuROM 7 and SafeDisc 4. YASU is a companion program for Daemon Tools and currently being hosted, supported and maintained by the Daemon Tools team. Picking the right DVD title

With “normal” DVD’s it’s relatively easy to decide which of the titles is the actual movie – Simply pick the one with the longest playback time. Sometimes though this can be difficult when a DVD contains multiple titles (TV Series for example), or when a crazy copy protection mechanism screws with the table of contents and makes it appears as if the DVD has multiple titles.

So how do you determine the right track? Simple … let your DVD playback software tell you …

VideoLAN VLC

VLC, a free video playback program available for Windows, MacOS X, Linux and other Operating Systems, is probably the easiest and most flexible tool to use for this purpose. Download VLC from the VLC Homepage, install it, and start it.

Note : Most Linux distributions come with so called package managers like APT, or Software Centre (Ubuntu), which typically allow you to install VLC straight from their.

Next insert your DVD if you haven’t already.

MacOS X

In the main menu, with VLC being the active application, click “File” “Open Disc…” (or press COMMAND + D).

A confirmation dialog will open showing the disc type VLC found (if you CD/DVD Rip/Other Tools Activators Patch only one DVD Rom drive – otherwise a file dialog will appear. In that case select the DVD drive on the left side).

The DVD will now start playback, which typically starts with the menu of the DVD.
Select the movie you want to rip and start watching the movie.

From the main menu you can now determine what title is the real title you need for ripping – make sure the actual movie is playing!
Click “Playback” “Title“.

The title in the list with the checkmark  in front of it is the active title you’re looking for – take note of the title number and playback time so you can find it back in HandBrake or whatever DVD ripping program you’re using and that’s all there is to it.

Windows

In the “Media” menu of VLC, select “Open Disc…” (or press CTRL + D).

Next select the type of disc you’re about to play (DVD), enter the drive letter (VLC will select the first DVD/CD Rom player – or use “Browse…“) and click “Play” to start playback.

From the usual DVD menu (if applicable) start the featured movie – before proceeding make sure the movie is actually playing.
Once the movie you’d like to rip is playing, select from the VLC menu “Playback” “Title“.
The title marked (see hypersnap 8.16 17 download below) is the title you’re looking for … write down title number and playback time of that title so you can find it later in HandBrake or other application you use for ripping a DVD.

Linux
